Maki

Maki was rescued with another wolf, Kamia, from Youngstown, Ohio. They were staying at the Richard E. Flauto Wildlife Foundation, which was quickly inherited by Tiffany Poulton when her fiancé Rich suddenly passed away from a heart attack at age thirty. Tiffany tried to keep her fiancé's dream alive by running the foundation, but she could not receive any funding to keep the place up and running. Unfortunately, she was forced to dissolve the foundation, and Tiffany began to call around to find places for the animals living there. Due to our limited space, we accepted only two of their wolves. Both Maki and Kamia arrived in the spring of 2006.

Both Maki and Kamia were extremely social at their old home, but have become more reserved once arriving to a new environment. Maki, however, is warming up quickly and expects to be back to her regular self any time now. Maki was actually the alpha of her pack, so she is much more comfortable around people and new situations. Maki is very affectionate towards people, and will give volunteers kisses on the lips. Maki is also playful, and while sometimes she will initiate play with her caretaker, other times she will just steal the shoe right off their foot! She was originally staying in a large enclosure with two other animals, Kamia and Mr. Cheyenne. Both Maki and Kamia are pure wolves, and since Mr. Cheyenne was a high-content wolf dog, the trio became the closest thing to a wolf pack at the sanctuary. Unfortunately, Mr. Cheyenne passed away about a month after they were put together. Without their man, the girls were overcome with grief and took their frustrations out on each other. We eventually had to separate the two girls and find new mates for them. Maki moved in with her brand new boyfriend, Nikki, and after settling some differences, the two are getting along fine. Maki has won respect from Nikki when she began to stand up for herself, and now they stand peacefully side-by-side.

Maki is a pure Grey wolf.
