| Lucian is one of the lucky few who actually came from a good home. His owner had just bought a new house, and was excited to add three large dogs to his family. The owner picked up two German Shepards and purchased Lucian from a breeder in California as a Native American Indian dog. Unfortunately, as Lucian grew older, he also grew larger, and it became obvious that Lucian was not a Native American Indian dog, but in fact, a wolf-dog. His owner did not have any experience with wolf-dogs, and so Lucian spent much of his time outside. The housing subdivision would also not allow a fence higher than six feet, and Lucian could easily stand on his hind legs and look over the fence. The owner and his girlfriend were planning on moving to another city in Arizona onto some property with four acres of land, solving most of Lucian's problems. The housing market, however, wasn't allowing the owner to sell his house. On top of all this, their neighbor's daughter would climb onto the fence and pet Lucian. Worried about the girl's safety if she fell in with three excited canines, and all the previous issues, it was decided that Lucian should go to a new home. The girlfriend contacted the Sanctuary, and promised to pay to have him neutered and drive him out to Wild Spirit. After looking over Lucian's story and photographs, we decided to accept him into our big four-legged family. |

Lucian has proved to be quite the friendly fellow! Although he likes to "talk" to strangers who approach his fence line, he will usually warm up to visitors inside his enclosure. Once he gets to know someone, he gets more playful and will gently nip and try to leap up on their back. When Lucian first arrived, he had a phobia of buckets. We use large buckets to clean waste, and so we hoped to ease him from his fear. We placed a bucket inside the enclosure, and after a few days of destroying the bucket, his phobia is gone. Lucian, on his first day, was introduced to Cove, and after a little hop across the removed fence on Cove's part, the two were introduced into their new enclosure. Their playful personalities make them a perfect match, and they love to wrestle before feeding in the morning. They also love to tag-team visitors in their enclosure, with Cove climbing on your back and Lucian jumping in your face!
