Nayati was owned by a lady who raised llamas in Ohio. Although she loved Nayati dearly, she could not properly provide for Nayati; she could not get him a companion animal or build him a proper enclosure, and so he was chained most of the time. She contacted us to see if we could take Nayati, and he arrived at our sanctuary when he was eleven months old. Nayati's claim to fame is when he appeared in John Carpenter's film, Vampires, in 1998. He also was the mascot for the University of New Mexico's Lobo football team. When he first arrived at our sanctuary, Nayati was our ambassador for our Outreach Program, which means he went out into the public to educate people about the true nature of wolves. However, in the year 2000, Nayati retired, because many wolves become stressed after numerous years of being out in the public since they are bombarded by different scents, sounds, and sights, and easily become overloaded. |

Nayati was a calm man and it seemed that nothing could startle him. He was very affectionate towards people, and would lick them on the face while gently nibbling on their chin. However, if he was with a caretaker he did not like, he would just keep to himself. Nayati was very peaceful and was content to watch the world go by. As a true wolf, he did not like it when people leaned over him or put their hand over his face, two acts he viewed as attempts to dominate him. But, he was very tolerant of people's mistakes, and only prolonged exposure to these dominating positions would make him upset. Nayati lived with a bossy female, Skye; she was usually exuberant and mischievous, and Nayati would try desperately to keep her under control. Nayati was diagnosed with severe liver cancer when a vet, Dr. Blackshear, came out to visit. When it was told that Nayati only had weeks to live, many of our dedicated members came out to say good-bye. When Nayati passed away, he was surrounded by several of his human friends who wished him a peaceful journey.
Nayati was a wolf, with a mix between Timber wolf and Tundra wolf. He passed away at the age of eleven. |
